Mellow Mushroom is probably the single most overrated pizza chain I've ever discovered. So many people worship this place, but the pizza is greasy and gross.

The hummus is great as is the veggie sandwich!

Great Pizza! This area needed a real pizza place! Great bar and atmosphere ... wish it were closer to my house!

The pizza is good. Not great, but good. The prices are a bit ridiculous for their specialty pizzas. They do have a nice bar and large outdoor seating as well. Aesthetically, the outside of this mellow is pretty ugly, but they make up for it with nice booths and nice interior decorating. It is worth a visit because there is not too many other viable options in the Tri Cities area.

Call ones are great and pizza is delicious also. I just feel that this place is way to expensive for pizza. One of the specialty pizza is roughly 30 dollars. I also don't like that the charge you like a dollar for extra saice for calzones or pizza. They basically give you a 2oz plastic cup.

Excellent pizzas and a huge selection of regional and national beers. Outdoor seating too. They have live trivia one night a week.

This trip to MM was just ok. We ordered an appetizer and pizza. The appetizers came out fairly quick, but we waited forever on our pizza...the manager then came and told us, that the printer had jammed and didn't print our pizza order, he apologized and removed it from our bill. Apparently they felt very bad, as the appetizers were charged at half off. However, the pizza, when we did get it, was burned on the bottom. It was still edible, and over all good. Had we not waited so long in the first place, I probably would have returned it.

They have some good specialty pizza here and lots of veggie friendly options. The prices were kind of high but so were many of the other restaurants in this area. I'm not sure if they do this all of the time but when I was there, a giant mushroom mascot was walking around greeting customers. Kinda of weird but whatever.

This place was great! Decor was fun and colorful. I ordered the "Holy Shitake Pie" since I'm a huge mushroom fan. Pizza was delish! Bartenders were super friendly and attentive. I will definitely come back here again next time I am in town. yum!

Mellow Mushroom is a great local restaurant that specializes in pizzas and calzones. It's family-friendly and serves lunch and dinner with flexible hours of 11am-10pm Sunday through Wednesday, and 11am-11pm Thursday through Saturday. On Tuesday nights they have Trivia Night! A fun event for everyone. When I arrived at 12pm at Mellow Mushroom we were seated right away; the restaurant was pretty empty at first, but quickly filled up as it got closer to 1pm. Wanting to try a few different things, I asked our waiter which appetizers are good, and he suggested something that wasn't even on the menu - how cool! We had their dough bites with beer cheese, and it was amazing. Make sure to ask for this secret menu item next time you're at Mellow Mushroom! I decided to try a small pizza and had half & half toppings - Mighty Meaty which came with a red sauce base with mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, ham and applewood smoked bacon, then Funky Q. Chicken which was BBQ chicken, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses, caramelized onions, and applewood smoked bacon, finished with a bbq sauce swirl. You can't go wrong with these pizzas, they are fantastic - well-cooked and great portions. My coworker had a pepperoni calzone; it was huge and looked amazing with a golden crust and pepperoni practically falling out of it. The music in Mellow Mushroom is a little loud and they seem to have a nice bar area. It's a great college hang-out place and is also family-friendly with a simple kids menu that you can't go wrong with. Mellow Mushroom is the perfect local, casual restaurant with great pizza and a cheerful, enjoyable waitstaff.

Visited this place for the first time last week. Place was very crowded. Lots of festivities, lots of kids, clearly a family place. Pizza was average. Price was TWICE OR MORE, what would be reasonable or customary! Will absolutely NEVER go back short of a post apocalyptic, Book of Eli scenario! For a really GREAT PIE, at a third the cost - go to Scratch Brick Oven in JC. It's a hole in the wall, but much better pie!

The pizza here is pretty good but not great. I've had better pies at the other MM locations so it could just be the pizza I ordered. I will say that the crust is amazingly good though. The staff here are really friendly and seem to know a lot about the beers they offer. Overall I just feel the food and atmosphere doesn't justify the price.

My wife and I went to Mellow Mushroom to get a beer and some food. My wife had the chicken wings and bruchetta. I had the steak and cheese calzone. The food was awesome. The service was outstanding. Our server was Maggie. I've seen posts that that this restaurant has high prices. Its true, and you have the option to go to little casaers or dominoes. They both are very close.

Horrible service. Was not greeted promptly to pick up carry out. Several employees passed me to go smoking outside. Bartender ignored me for 5 minutes. She was chewing gum and then I saw her spitting something into a trash can.

We wanted something different and never have been there. We got the pepperoni calzone and the steak calzone which was really good. We had extra to take home. A very easy going place, good for families. A little high priced for us but would definitely go back.

So, MM bakes a mean pie, but the beer could be a few degrees colder. This ain't Europe, y'all. It's 'Murica and we like our beer ice freakin' cold! My favorite is the "Maui Wowie." It used to be "off the menu" but it's on the menu now. Pesto base with ham, pineapple, jerk chicken, banana peppers, Applewood smoked bacon & mozzarella cheese. Normally I wouldn't put this all together but it's amazing. The salads are good and they converted the old "El Chico" building. Hell it may have been something before that, first time I saw it was 2004 and it was an El Chico. Kind of a Hippie-chic motif inside and it can be pretty loud in there when it's busy. Loud like a cacophonous gymnasium. Anyhow, we dig it. Again, JC has an embarrassment of riches in the pizza joint department and MM is one of the standouts. I agree with Tony P., it can be inconsistent. For the majority of my visits it's been really good though. One thing I never have to deal with here is doughy undercooked crust, a pizza peeve of mine.

I had a bad experience at the Mellow Mushroom in Knoxville and had avoided the Johnson City location since it opened despite my family's love for it. However this evening my sister-in-law, who has celiac disease, was visiting, so we needed gluten-free options. I decided to give the JC location a shot. Our server was courteous and as attentive as she could be in the poorly-designed dining space. My SIL and wife split a gluten-free specialty pizza while our kids split a regular pepperoni pie. My father ordered the "Mushroom Club," minus mushrooms. To really test the menu, my brother-in-law and I decided to build a pie with some of the premium ingredients. In addition to pepperoni and salami, we added Andoullie sausage and "premium, fresh, adjective, adjective, adjective" steak--a six-dollar add-on. Since I am a big cheese snob, I also ordered the premium Sargento Monteamore cheese. The preparation of the pies was lazy. My sister-in-law, who is also pregnant, specifically asked them to leave the feta cheese off half the gluten-free pie since she cannot eat it. No dice: she got one slice without feta. We had to order an entirely new pizza just so she could eat--and we were charged for it. My father's club was utterly unimpressive. Smallish, cheap-looking meat and limp vegetables. And our "premium" pie? First of all the cheese was not worth the price of admission. It did not taste like the Monteamore I have purchased before at all, although it was admittedly an upgrade over the flat cheese found on the other pies. There was no "steak" on the pie at all, and I told the waitress as much and that I would not pay the $6 charge. The manager removed it, but the waitress passed on that the cooks insisted that they put "two whole bags" of steak on the pizza. Bags? Fresh steak, in bags? Nope: she had just told me this "premium" side was just frozen and pre-shipped like everything else. I decided to peak under the cheese to look for the mystery steak. What I found was ground beef, plain and simple. it is outright offensive to sell ground beef as "steak." Even if it had ever been "steak," beef that has been ground up is ground beef, plain and simple. It was dry and flavorless hence why it had gone unnoticed. I will generously say the "Andouille" sausage was nice, although I am 75% sure it was just Italian sausage with an extra price tag as it lacked the unique bite of real Andouille. All this was a preface to the worst part of the meal: for a family of five adults and three children, we shelled out $93 in including the (well-deserved) tip. That was with nearly no leftovers. FOR PIZZA, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. Not only will I never be back, I will no longer indulge my wife and sister-in-law's requests to spend my money at this place. I can make a gluten-free pizza myself cheaper and with truly premium ingredients for half what this place charges.

Rest assured 1st and last visit to this mellow mushroom, NOTHING compared to the 1 in boone nc and in Bristol va . Cheesesteak sub had no taste and the calazone's were half the size and tasteless. Appeared to be a good place for those who drink to get drunk, as you call your order in for pick up and they seat you at the bar to get your food. Sad but true I would've enjoyed $30 worth of food more from Arbys.

The pizza here is actually fantastic. But the prices just suck. It's almost annoying what they charge. One time we got a deal on SaveRightNow.com and were able to eat here for half price. That was a little better. Here is a shot of the main sign.

This Mellow Mushroom location is horribly inconsistent. I've rated it a 3 since on many occasions my dining companions and I have gotten 5 star pizza and service. Unfortunately, I've also frequently gotten 1 star pizza and service. When they are on their game, the pizza is incredible. Last night, however, our group had to send back some items as they were so poorly prepared, and the pizza was very poor. The crust had been tossed way too thin, and it was burned on the bottom. I think the reasons for this are pretty obvious--it all depends on who is making and baking the pizzas and what kind of supervision is going on. With the open kitchen you can see what is going on. Last night it seemed like the cooks were having a big old time throwing pie crusts around and singing. When we've been there before and had good pizza they have been busy and there was no time for goofing off. My advice if you like Mellow Mushroom is to visit the locations in Asheville, Sevierville, Gatlinburg, or even Bristol. We've never gotten a bad pizza at any of these other locations.

WOW!!! This was our first visit, we were a little timid regarding the name but we are so thankful we stopped in to try this amazing pizza! Our family loves pizza, we could eat it as our every meal. We ordered plain cheese pizza so we could taste all of the ingredients. We were thoroughly impressed! The sauce had a sausage and tomato taste to it like no other, the cheese was incredible and the crust was the best part. YUM! I could eat just the crust alone. I love the decorations, it is so cool. The man made out of chains and cranks as well as the transformer inside, the paint on the walls, the psychedelic effects are awesome! Parking is easy and pricing is great. If you ever want some good pizza in a relaxed restaurant stop in. The servers are so nice, happy and in groovy moods! Stop in, relax and enjoy.

Mellow Mushroom has locations nationwide. This one has a lot of specialty pizzas and the calzones are huge. Also recommend the bruschetta which is apparently free to large parties. We were with a very large group and was seated in a side area separated from the main seating area but not isolated, with a separate service station and TV. The pizza crust is tasty and chewy if that is to your liking. Prices are quite a bit higher than normal. Overall, a good pizza place and a lot of fun too. Parking is limited but there is an overflow lot that you have to go back out on the street to access.

Horrible experience...advertise kids night...face painting...balloon making...$10.00 large pizza. No face painter didn't have time...waitress was rude...order thin crust pizza...got very thick crust. Left there and had to get grandkids something else to eat...food was terrible...will never be back...beware of Wednesday night scam!!!

I frequent this place pretty often and drive about 35 minutes to do so for a few reasons. Firstly, the staff (bartenders and servers alike) are incredibly nice and more importantly knowledgeable about the beers that they have on tap and will be more then happy to let you try a beer to see how you feel about it. The food is good and although a little pricey, you pay for a good quality product which you absolutely receive. They have a great outdoor seating area which makes after work drinks/dinner very nice. It is just a very good atmosphere for a bar and if you go on Tuesday nights they have Team Trivia which is a great time with friends.
